About Us

The Northwestern University Center for Forced Migration Studies brings together an interdisciplinary group of faculty and students and fosters collaborative networks with organizations and practitioners to provide an extensive program of research, teaching, training, outreach and networking in forced migration studies.

CFMS launched the Eastern DRC Situational Assessment Project in 2010 to create a platform for collaborative reporting on the variables affecting conflict in the region. We are interested in understanding the ways in which the different variables (e.g. mining and displacement) effect one another and fuel the ongoing conflict. The goal is to create a comprehensive picture of the complexities of the situation in order to better formulate initiatives and polices to bring about constructive change.  As an interdisciplinary institution, we believe in the power of the intersection between technology and academia, and the open source platform allows all of our partners to be contributors.
